چکیده

B1422+231 and PG1115+080 are gravitational lens systems producing quadruple QSO images where there is real promise that time delays can constrain the Hubble constant. In addition, the lensing galaxies are both part of groups which can play an important role in modelling the lens potential. This article reports redshifts for the lensing galaxies and three neighboring galaxies in each of the two systems. B1422+231 consists of a group at z = 0.339 with a dispersion of 733 km s−1, and PG1115+080 is a group at z = 0.311 with a dispersion of 326 km s−1. One of the neighboring galaxies in the B1422+231 system turned out to be an emission line galaxy at z = 0.536, suggesting that QSO light passing through B1422+231 may have been subjected to lensing by a cluster at this more distant redshift. The velocity dispersion of the lensing galaxy in PG1115+080 is determined to be 281±25 km s (1 square aperture), which is surprisingly large given the image splittings of 1.2′′

Subaru Mid-infrared Imaging of the Quadruple Lenses Pg1115+080 and B1422+231: Limits on Substructure Lensing

We present mid-infrared imaging at 11.7 μm for the quadruple lens systems, PG1115+080 and B1422+231, using the cooled mid-infrared camera and spectrometer (COMICS) attached on the Subaru telescope. These lensed QSOs are characterized by their anomalous optical and radio flux ratios as obtained for (A1, A2) images of PG1115+080 and (A, B, C) images of B1422+231, respectively, i.e., such flux rat...

A new method for the estimate of H0 from quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems

We present a new method to estimate the Hubble constant H0 from the measured time delays in quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems. We show how it is possible to get an estimate of H0 without the need to completely reconstruct the lensing potential thus avoiding any a priori hypothesis on the expression of the galaxy lens model. Our method only needs to assume that the lens potential may b...

Discovering Mass Clumps in Distant Galaxies with Lensing: the Case of B1422+231

Substructure in distant gravitational lens galaxies can be detected because it alters the brightnesses and shapes of the lensed images. The optical and radio flux ratios in the four-image lens B1422+231 imply that there is a ∼ 10–10 h M⊙ mass clump in the lens galaxy in front of image A; this is the first constraint on the mass of a particular clump lying in a distant galaxy and detected by its...

Qualitative Theory for Lensed QSOs

We show that some characteristics of multiply-imaged QSO systems are very modelindependent and can be deduced accurately by simply scrutinizing the relative positions of images and galaxy-lens center. These include the time-ordering of the images, the orientation of the lens potential, and the rough morphology of any ring. Other features can differ considerably between specific models; H0 is an...
